KOTA KINABALU: B.Grimm Power shares a common goal with the Sabah government and communities through its ‘GreenLeap – Global and Green’ strategy.

This strategy consists of three pillars, said Nopadej Karnasuta, B.Grimm Power President of Thailand Malaysia Business and Energy and Industrial Solutions Business.

To begin with, he said they have introduced sustainable fuels to the world. Next is to increase the production of greener and cleaner energy with reliable power supplies. Finally, to develop advanced industrial solutions for end consumers.

For sustainable fuels, he said they have started importing gas into the country, combining it with the development of ammonia and green energy as part of technology development and years of R&D.

“In renewable energy, together with reliable partners, we need to develop not only generation sites but also ensure that we integrate them into the system through smart microgrids, transmission and distribution enhancement, and both software and hardware development,” he said.

“And we must ensure stability through battery storage systems, combined with reliable gas-to-power and green energy as part of an integrated solution.

“And lastly, for industrial solutions, we have developed technologies such as cooling systems, battery storage as a service, as well as modernised AI-driven technology like data centres, which can serve the community and support the modernisation of Sabah,” he said.

He said B.Grimm has been in this business for over 30 years, starting from gas-to-power for industrial customers.

“Ensuring cleaner and greener energy comes from the technology we have developed,” he said.

He added that they use the most modernised gas turbines and steam turbines to ensure the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.

“That is something that has been developed over time. And now we are also providing more green energy as part of the system.

“Over the past 10 years we have been developing solar farms, wind farms, floating solar and rooftop solar for the system and for communities.

“That has proven successful in terms of sustainable development. In terms of capacity, we have built up to 6,000 megawatts across 15 different countries,” he said.

This, he added, has supported both reliable power and greener energy, and there is more to come, including projects in Malaysia.

“We have already been part of development in a number of states, and we aim to support Sabah more in the future.

“The way B.Grimm does business, we always think first of how we can serve the community. Sabah has abundant resources, rich cultural diversity, and great people living together,” he said.

SESB needs at least 700mW to offer power stability in Sabah https://sabahmedia.com/2023/10/31/sesb-needs-at-least-700mw-to-offer-power-stability-in-sabah/ https://sabahmedia.com/2023/10/31/sesb-needs-at-least-700mw-to-offer-power-stability-in-sabah/#respond Tue, 31 Oct 2023 03:55:45 +0000 https://sabahmedia.com/?p=44449

KOTA KINABALU: A 100 megawatt (mW) Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) has been proposed as a practical solution to the frequent power disruption in Sabah.

Acting as a backup power bank for the entire state, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Madius Tangau explained that BESS is a giant, high-tech battery that stores electricity once charged and releases it when the need arises.

In his special column in Daily Express, Tangau further added that by investing in BESS, Sabah is assured of stable power supply, which reduces harmful emissions making the environment healthier for all, and is aligned with SESB’s commitment to reducing carbon discharge and in line with the commitment to reduce carbon emissions, jointly with the NET Zero 2050 initiative.

But, still, he noted that this is just a short term solution to the long-standing power disruption in Sabah, which not only affects thousands of consumers across the state, but also industries that rely on stable supply.

Living in a constituency that faces power disruption almost daily, it is no surprise that Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong lauded the government’s allocation under Budget 2024 for the construction of the Sabah Southern Grid Line and implementation of Large Scale Solar (LSS) projects.

She noted that studies show that Sabah, especially on the east coast, boasts of the highest photovoltaic power potential in Malaysia, making it highly suitable for LSS projects, thus calling the ministry in-charge of the sector to promptly take action.

Wong stressed that even a small country like Singapore, which has a limited land area, could currently generate over 700mW of electricity through solar energy, what more Sandakan with an area of 28, 205 square kilometres, which occupies 38.3 per cent of Sabah’s territory.

She believes that Sandakan is ready to generate at least half of Sabah’s energy needs from solar power.

Sabah, she added, has a significant potential for generating energy through solar, biomass and biogas, which could help reduce the state’s reliance on fossil fuels, therefore introducing improved infrastructure and financial incentives was imperative to fully leverage the potential of this emerging energy sector.

Tangau, meanwhile, stood firm with his conviction that SESB should spearhead a transformative change, and was ready to take on bold projects such as the construction of a combined-cycle gas turbine power generator with a capacity of 700mW to cease load-shedding altogether in Sabah.

On solar power, although he agrees that “it is a great idea”, but he noted that it is not an instant fix as transitioning to renewables take time as it takes a lot of planning, and as the utility company for Sabah, SESB must first assess the state’s energy situation before paving was for renewable energy (RE).

He said that currently Sabah is operating on a meagre supply of power with maximum electricity demand around 1,086.58mW but the power plants could only churn out 1,217.9mW, leaving a reserve margin of 131.3mW, too little should demand spikes.

Parti Solidariti Tanahairku (Sabah Star) secretary-general II Rizal Johari stressed that addressing the electricity problem was vital for improving the state’s economic situation, because failing to do so causes potential investors to shy away from doing businesses in Sabah.

Tangau said one of the proposals was for SESB to own the capacity to generate at least 70 per cent, or about 700mW, of its own electricity in order to control the state’s base load power requirements before going into RE. With this, he believes that the state’s power supply will be fully stabilised once the base load issue is resolved.

He also noted that the state paid for the missteps in the past, such as the opposition to the 300mW of potential power generation from the Liwagu Dam in Ranau and the Coal Power Plant in Lahad Datu, which he said could have shielded Sabah from the current power woes.

Moving forward, he said Sabah must not replicate the past errors and to find the best remedy to the frequent power disruption in the state.

KOTA KINABALU: Just about a week ago, the Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong highlighted the importance for Sabah to develop additional energy sources to meet the industry needs.

Typically, industries want a dependable and high supply of electricity to run their businesses, which, unfortunately, is still lacking in Sabah.

Liew, in his winding up speech during the Dewan Negara special meeting debating on the motion of the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review, disclosed that currently 89 per cent of Sabah’s power generation is based on natural gas.

Its current energy reserve margin is only at 11 per cent, which is way below the ideal reserve margin of 30 per cent.

Hence the frequent power disruption in the state, which could be a deal breaker for potential investors considering opening businesses in Sabah.

He noted that since coal-based power plants are not an option to meet Sabah’s power needs, new energy sources or technology, including green power, must be explored and considered to be the top choices as a long-term solution.

Liew said that renewable energy, or RE in short, can be potentially explored include hydroelectric, wind, solar and Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, which according to the recently launched Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040), generation of these sources into the state’s power grid could increase to 1,000 megawatts (MW), or 50 per cent of total generation capacity, by 2030.

This was part of the plans under SE-RAMP 2040, which was launched on Sept 19, here.

The plan was described by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as the “pride of the state government” which allows the state chart its path to drive the gas and electricity supply sector development on itw own, since they understand what the state truly needs.

He said the plan was in line with the government’s aspiration to continue making sustainable power accessible to the people, which also complement the National Energy Policy launched last year, and the National Energy Transition Roadmap 2050 (NETR) launched in August this year.

Realising that the power supply issue was a long standing problem affecting both Sabah and Sabahans, Hajiji said that under the master plan, seven specific targets are laid out which would be achieved within the medium or long term.

The state government also hopes that the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) in Sabah can be lowered to 100 minutes from the current about 300 by 2030.

This will also go well with the Sabah government’s decision to take over the regulatory authority on power supply and renewable energy from the federal Energy Commission and the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) by Jan 3 next year.

The takeover would allow the state government total regulatory control of the energy sector in Sabah, through the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECos).

This move would allow the state government to decide on matters involving enactment of laws, policymaking, electricity and renewable energy infrastructures in tandem with Sabah’s holistic development plan, therefore paving the way for Sabah to ramp up electricity supply for industry needs, benefiting both the people and state

And since SE-RAMP 2040 could ensure a stable and sustainable power supply, Hajiji hopes it would lure more investors to promote economic growth, create economic spillovers offering job opportunities to locals.

By Vivien Joannes

KOTA KINABALU, July 20, 2023:

There have been a lot of concerns of late pertaining to the power supply in Sabah.

And while power disruption is nothing new in the state, consumers are hoping that this norm would somehow be a thing of the past.

With increasing demands for a more stable power supply in Sabah, the public are also beginning to question the status of projects aimed at bettering the state’s utility services.

One that came up was the RM2.3 billion Upper Padas 180MW hydroelectric dam in Tenom, which commenced work in 2013 and was scheduled to be completed in 2019.

However, according to The Vibes, the Special Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) final report released in May last year revealed that the project was suspended for many years due to technical design issues.

In 2015, a 60 per cent stake in the project was given to Kerjaya Kagum Hitech JV Sdn Bhd, while 20 per cent each went to the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) and Sabah Government.

Just three years back, it was reported that the appointed contractor tasked to undertake the preliminary works faced financial constraint, forcing further delay to the project.

As a result, the Federal Government then approved a RM569 million soft loan to SESB for an equity injection into a special purpose vehicle or consortium tasked to undertake the project.

Today, entering its 10th year, the project has yet to start. It is hoped that the new company would be able to complete the decade-long project. Fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, last year, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor announced that the state government supports the application by New Sabah Hydro to develop the project, and identified the Upper Padas projects as a 170MW hydroelectric plant with a run-of-river concept at Sungai Maligan and Ulu Padas in Sipitang.

This announcement came after Jentayu Sustainables Bhd received a letter of approval from the Sabah government to develop run-of-river power plants on the two rivers code-named Project Oriole, with installed capacities of 31MW and 129MW, and is part of the company’s existing renewable energy projects.

It is believed that the Telekosang Hydro One (TH1) cascading run-of-river hydropower plant had began its operation after its successful test mid February this year.

Aimed at meeting 16.3 per cent of Sabah’s total electricity requirements, and expected to generate RM65 million cash flow per-year over the next 21 years, the TH1 is Malaysia’s largest privately-owned cascading ROR hydropower plant, and is the first to be finanved by a greenfield mini-hydro SRI sukuk.

However, a quick check on the project, and based on photos sent to the Sabah Media from a reliable source, showed some development on site, involving heavy land clearing and hill cutting, however raised eyebrows as to whether there was thorough monitoring to ensure it complies with the EIA standards.

If Sabahans have to wait for another decade to get stable power supply, then the Sabah government should consider an alternative by looking for a company outside Malaysia that could offer a more pragmatic and sound method of power generation, and yet has vast experience in hydroelectric projects and is willing to propose a more competitive selling price.

If an international company is the answer to improve the state’s energy supply, there is no reason for the Sabah government to deny the possibility of fulfilling the people’s wish for a more stable power connection to their homes.
