KOTA KINABALU, Although International Women’s Day (IWD) is officially observed on March 8 each year, its spirit continues to inspire initiatives well beyond a single day. In Sabah, Sheraton Kota Kinabalu and Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu recently held a joint event to honour the global movement, reinforcing their commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The event, hosted by Sheraton Kota Kinabalu, featured a Western set luncheon alongside a panel discussion aligned with the 2026 IWD theme, “Give to Gain.” It brought together more than 60 associates and industry leaders to exchange views on advancing gender parity and strengthening community contributions.

Sheraton Kota Kinabalu General Manager Nauman Hasan welcomed attendees, describing the gathering as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, resilience and leadership of women, while underscoring the collective responsibility to build a more inclusive and equitable future.

He also acknowledged the invited speakers, noting that their participation reflected both leadership and a shared commitment to meaningful progress.

The panel session featured prominent figures including Josie Lai, Permanent Secretary of the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment; Peter Chu, Chief Executive Officer of TP Group; and Charlene Chan, General Manager of Sheraton Kuching. The speakers shared personal insights, professional experiences and perspectives on the link between career success and community engagement.

Also present were members of the Sheraton Kota Kinabalu Executive Committee and invited guests from TP Group, including Erica Lim, Louise Lim, Isabel Chu and Emily Chong.

The venue was decorated in IWD’s signature colours, with purple-themed linens and fresh orchids enhancing the atmosphere. The programme concluded with a networking session among associates from various departments of both hotels.

Meanwhile, Suresh Ramasamy, General Manager of Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu, highlighted the vital role of women across all departments, noting that their leadership and dedication are central to shaping the hospitality experience and defining the guest journey.
