KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) will launch a public legal education initiative aimed at clarifying Sabah’s constitutional framework and rights.
Its president, Datuk Mohamed Nazim Maduarin, said the programme is being introduced amid growing public debate over Sabah’s constitutional position within the Federation of Malaysia.
Nazim said the public education campaign will be launched via social media first, with the hope that it will reach a wider audience.
“We will launch our public education campaign via social media first and hopefully it will be able to reach further. Please follow us via Facebook and Tik tok,” he said during the Public Town Hall on 40 per cent Revenue Entitlement and Launches Public Legal Education Initiative at the SLS Secretariat today.
According to him this initiative seeks to replace speculation and political rhetoric with documented legal fact.
“The objective of this initiative is to enhance public understanding of Sabah ’ s constitutional framework through careful, document-based explanation,” he added.
Under the scope of the initiative, the programme will provide clear, document-based explanations on the legal nature of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and its status as a binding foundational agreement, as well as Sabah’s constitutional position at the formation of Malaysia.
It will also cover subsequent constitutional amendments and structural developments affecting state autonomy, and explain the distinction between political negotiations and constitutional rights.
In addition, the initiative will address the legal basis and current status of Sabah’s 40 per cent revenue entitlement under Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution, as well as autonomy powers that remain constitutionally intact today.
The Society emphasised that all materials produced under the initiative will be grounded in constitutional provisions, statutory instruments, historical documents and judicial decisions.
“The Sabah Law Society emphasises that this initiative is non-partisan, independent of political endorsement, grounded in primary legal sources, focused on accuracy over rhetoric, and clear about what is legally viable and what is not,” he said.
